ENDING GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE
In one study, 80% of farmworker women said they experienced some form of sexual violence on the job. Another study found that about 1/3 of women farmworkers suffer domestic violence.
Alianza is working to ensure farmworker women, and immigrant and migrant survivors of violence have access to life-saving protections and supports by pushing for the following pieces of legislation:
LABOR RIGHTS
Farmworker women lack critical workplace health, safety, and rights protections. Farmworkers – including children as young as 12 years old – are at high risk for work-related injuries and death, including toxic chemical exposures, heat stress, and COVID-19. Farmworkers also lack many workplace rights and protections such as minimum wage, overtime pay, workers' compensation or collective bargaining.
Alianza is working for the federal government to enact robust, federal workplace health and safety protections, and labor and employment safeguards by pushing for the following key pieces of legislation:
IMMIGRANT AND MIGRANT JUSTICE
Many farmworker women & families lack work authorization & immigration status. About half of our country's crop farmworker labor force is undocumented and subject to immigration enforcement, impacting the livelihood and stability of both workers and our food supply chain.
Alianza is working to ensure farmworker women and their families have work authorization and a pathway to citizenship by pushing for the following legislation:
PESTICIDE EXPOSURE
Farmworker women & families face severe risks from toxic pesticide exposure. 10,000–20,000 pesticide poisonings occur among farmworkers each year. Pesticides can cause both short and long-term health effects, including certain kinds of cancers, miscarriages, birth defects, and infertility.
