STATEMENT OF ALIANZA NACIONAL DE CAMPESINAS ON THE SUPREME COURT’S DECISION ON DACA

(June 18, 2020)

The Alianza Nacional de Campesinas applauds. the decision of the Supreme Court to block the Trump Administration’s cruel effort to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program which prevents the deportation of undocumented immigrants who came to the US as children.

Farmworkers are among the more than 200,000 DACA recipients who are considered essential workers under the Trump administration’s own definition and will, for the time being, be protected from deportation.

While this is a momentous victory for immigrant workers and their families, the battle is not over.  We join with our allies and supporters in demanding that President Trump announce that he will not make another attempt to repeal DACA and, further, that he immediately directs DHS to reopen the DACA process to individuals who were not able to apply for eligibility when he terminated it.

In addition, we call on Senate Majority Leader McConnell to put the American Dream and Promise Act, which will establish a path to citizenship for Dreamers and immigrants with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or Deferred Enforced Departure (DED), to an immediate vote in the Senate

.Deporting hundreds of thousands of young immigrant workers in the middle of a pandemic would be not only unjust but immoral.  It is time to put an end to policies that target immigrant workers and their families. ~
